Hi there, anyone got any tips for making 'accomplished' players work well on the wing?

The two players I have in mind are Buononatte in the AML position and Gourcuff at AMR. Both are natural AMC and accomplished on the wing.

They are both fantastic players with great dribbling and technique, but as I play with a small, quick striker there's no point in them getting on the outside and whipping balls in - so I guess 'hug the touchline' is the wrong instruction.

If I wanted them to come inside and reap havoc, or just generally float around the final third looking for space, what should I instruct them to do? Buonanotte's right-foot is weak so telling him to cut inside from the left doesn't seem wise to me either.

Hmmmm.... any suggestions to make these lads effective from the flanks?

Hiya, I'm Newcastle in season 5 with an awesome squad but can't seem to get any consistency with my formation. I have won 2 domestic cups and finished 3rd in the Prem but I draw too many games and lose too many against relegation-threatened clubs for some reason.

Also - I ALWAYS come unstuck against the 4-5-1 wingers formation.

Has anyone got any tips for a formation or certain tactic I should use with the following squad?

GK: Akinfeev, regen

RB: Jonathan, Diego Renan

CB: Otamendi, Danny Wilson, Caceres, regen

LB: Criscito, Gabriel Silva

DM - Huddlestone, Mariga, Adrien, regen

MC - Hamsik, Badelj, Gago, regen

AM - Gourcuff, Buononatte, Ninis, Zezinho, regen

ST - Paloschi, Dzeko, Kadlec, Pandev, regen

I'd like to play two up front as Paloschi and Dzeko are both unreal... Paloschi bagged 35 league goals last year and I've just brought in Dzeko in pre-season. Also signed Gourcuff without really thinking too much about where to play him - maybe AMR?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I think of myself as somewhat knowledgeable about football but this doesn't always translate itself to FM. The main reason for this is that I have a hard time translating my ideas into orders and what certain changes to those orders do on the pitch.
So what do I plan to do about it? I'll explain the construction of my tactic step by step while you guys (if you would be so kind) can make comments, suggestions, ...
(It's not exactly asking for a tactic so I hope this is alright).

I'll play Oudenaarde, a midtable team in the Belgian 3rd division A. Inother words, this tactic can't be to complicated. Also being a midtable team I don't have the players to use a domination tactic.
I have a decent mix of players. I have a great 28y old targetman with pro league experience and a 38 y old midfielder/striker with international experience (but slow as hell unfortunatly). The rest are unremarkable at first glance.
I'll be almost exclusivly playing against 4-4-2 tactics.

I'm want to use a tactic that dominates posssession and mostly scores during conversion (for lack of the correct word, fast change from defence to attack). I'm thinking of a 4-3-2-1 tactic to dominate in the middle. Passes will go very fast to the targetman while the two AM's rush forward to overload the opponents defence.

So far any comments or warnings?

Hi, first post on here so bear with me!

Playing patch 10.3, trying to create a lopsided "invincibles/current formation" hybrid for Arsenal (currently in 2nd season):

Walcott (FL)......V. Persie/Bendtner (CF)
.................................................. ......Arshavin (AMR)
Nasri/Rosicky (ML)...............Fabregas (MC[R])
........................Diaby/Nordveidt (DM)
Clichy.............Vermaelen.....Gallas/Senderos.......Sagna

Team settings:
Very fluid
Attacking
More roaming
More expressive
Press more
Zonal marking

Defensive line - middle to one off "push up" depending on opposition
Width - middle to middle +3
Tempo- middle to slow (6ish).

GK: LB collect.

I've got the wingbacks set to auto, passing: short (5); crossing: sometimes
CBs: Central Defender - Defend; tight marking: No
DM: Anchor man - Defend
I've moved mentality to 3 for CBs, middle for full backs + DM
Creative freedom to 7 for CBs, middle for DM, Middle +2 for WBs.

CM: Advanced playmaker - Support
ML: Winger - support
AMR: Inside Forward - Attack
FL: Inside Forward - Attack. Long shots/through balls: rarely
CF: Complete Forward - Attack
I've moved crossing to rarely and deep for the attacking players to mirror Arsenal's style IRL.

My attack has been amazing, lots of chances and goals (6 players scored over 10 goals first season, Theo has been a revelation in the "Henry" wide left role cutting in, RVP in world squad), although granted the players are more than decent regardless of the tactics. Defence was solid also, 3/4th best in the league. After an awful start while I tweaked the tactic, finished 2nd in the league (2 defeats in last 34 games), won the league cup, CL quarter final (out to 3-1 agg. to R. Madrid - Casillas MOM in both legs) - so something to build on, right??

However, halfway into the second season and I'm noticing my defence is crumbling. Two personel changes: Senderos for Gallas and Hart for Almunia, so it may be down to these, but I seem to be suscpetable to any sort of through ball and crosses from the byline. Defenders don't seem to engage forwards at all and just leave them to get on the end of through balls, and while my wide players track back, any cross into the box is inevitably won by the opposition.

I've tried changing the WB's to FB- supports, and experimented with Stopper/cover CBs but to no avail.

Rather than going down the "sign Otamendi / Sahko" route, I was just wondering if there's a way to sort this out tactically, in terms of the best way to set up your defence in a high line, hard pressing, overtly attacking formation?? Apologies if this all sounds naive/amateurish, but I'd love to perfect this formation as it works so well going forward! Any thoughts or tips appreciated...

Fellow managers

I am looking for some help with my 4-2-3-1 tactic, playing with Preston North End in the Premier League in 2013/14. I have stabilised Preston in the top flight, and even qualified for the Europa League via the fair play award, but I am now struggling to win games and score goals, despite having a much better squad than last season.

I like to play a 4-2-3-1 with two wingers/inside forwards, an attacking creative player and a love striker, with a fluid style. I vary from counter-attacking to just attacking.

GK
Joe Hart (a coup as he was on a free in 2013), no problems here.

RB
Joe Hutchinson, a very decent prospect and good in the air. Set to automatic.

LB
Jeremy Helan, as above.

CBs
Craig Cathcart and Christophe Berra, one sweeping up and the other defending.

CM(D)
Alex Song (another great bargain signing), set to ball-winning mode with defensive role.

CM(S)
Adrien (a cheap signing from Sporting Lisbon), set to box-to-box mode with support role.

AML
Ross Wallace, a survivor from the Championship, set to be an attacking inside forward switching with the AMR.

AMR
James Henry, has developed nicely and can plan on both flanks, also set to inside forward role.

AMC
Nicholas Lodeiro, my advanced playmaker, set to an attacking role.

SC
Jo (signed on a free from Man City), set as a complete forward with attacking mode.

So you see not a bad side but I would like suggestions on how I could get more out of them.

A relatively standard 4-2-3-1 with a defensive winger on one side tracking back and hasseling fullbacks, and a playmaker on the other side threatening to punish fullbacks that get forward. This isn't necessarily a problem. The problem is how I want the team to act when we're in possession of the ball:

Spoiler:

This is the problem. I want Ronaldo to have a completely free reign over the field, but I want him to start on the fullback and once their defense gains its shape, he starts moving into space wherever he can. Essentially it's the Messi role at Barcelona.

The other special position is the DM, in this case Diarra. I want him playing like Busquets (here in yellow, between Pique and Puyol in red):

Spoiler:

This covers the flanks and the center with 3 defenders, allowing the fullbacks to act as wide midfielders, covering the role that you might assume Ronaldo and Granero will be playing.

Granero I want to play a Kuyt type of role; when I have attempted to employ this tactic I have bought Kuyt or Park.

van der Vaart should be playing the role of Ramires for Brazil and now Chelsea. When I have tried to implement this tactic I have certainly not used van der Vaart. This quote on zonal marking explains the role:

Quote:

The role of Ramires is also interesting. He effectively plays the same role he does for Benfica, shuttling from a central midfield position when defending, to a right-wing position when in possession. This requires a tremendous amount of energy, but the fact that he and Maicon (the right-back) possess both stamina and speed, means that those two can effectively cover three positions (right-back, right central midfield and right-wing) by themselves.

This again highlights how I DO NOT NEED Ronaldo on the wing when we attack; I want him in the middle between the defensive and midfield lines, but again I do not want him starting in the middle as a classic #10 because it is too predictable.

The final position is just a playmaker role, but with some defensive responsibilities. Xavi/Scholes/Cesc a few years ago.

So essentially, I want to set up a fairly standard 4-2-3-1 in defense, but on attack I need the players to play far more complex roles; roles that I'm not sure can be created without the arrows of much much older FM games. The theory being my RB and RCM are covering 3 positions, and Kuyt is covering 1.5 or 2 himself as a left wing and a forward, which can make it seem like I have more than 11 men on the field. It takes very fit players, but it can be done.

So what's the verdict? How do I get my DM to slide into the center of a wide 3 man defense when we are in possession? How do I get my CBs to move wide? How do I get my RCM to get wide and attack while still functioning as a CM? How do I get my right wing to play as an attacking midfielder?
