N.B.: The greyed-out fields on the calculator do not affect a coach's star rating, so you can leave those blank.

Any feedback is welcome.

Background: *Warning - Long spoiler!*
Spoiler:

November 21, 2011. "800+ new features" in FM 12 but thankfully new coach formulas wasn't one of them! Everything remains the same as in FM 11 in the coach rating front, so the calculator is fully compatible with FM 12.

Interestingly enough though, coaches in FM 12 have a 'Best Training Category' field... where have I seen that before?
But that piece of info on its own is useless. 'Best Training Category' doesn't actually tell you how good the coach is (even in that particular best training category)... for all you know, he could have 1 star in Attacking and 0.5 stars in everything else... so yeah, 'Best Training Category: Attacking' but he's rubbish at it!

Since I didn't have to update the calculator, I've been working on another project... the Real Staff Search, a sort of cross between the coach calculator and the in-game search feature, which can be found at http://bonzollm.vze.com

October 22, 2010. New Football Manager version, more changes to coach training! 'Set Pieces' category is gone (you now train players in Set Pieces individually, apparently) and the old 'Goalkeeping' category has been split in two: 'GK - Shot Stopping' and 'GK - Handling'.

The way Shot Stopping and Handling rating is calculated is the same as the old Goalkeeping formula... no major changes there. Set Pieces was without a doubt the most complex/obscure formula, so the disappearance of this training category in FM 11 should now make it possible to get 5* across the board.

While I was updating the calculator to reflect the changes above, I started messing with skins for the interface and ended up doing a bit of cosmetic work to it... hope you like the new look.

November 4, 2009. It's now just over a week since I received my copy of Football Manager 2010, rushed to the computer to install FM (as you do ) and started a new game. Being the hardcore lower league manager I am (the kind who likes leaving no stone unturned when it comes to finding every possible player and coach that may be hiding out there), I was immediately taken aback by this new 5-star with half stars increments coach rating system in FM10... (Oh, no! I badly need some decent coaches but how do I know who out of the 250 coaches on this list is any good now that SI has changed the star rating system again?)

The nice spreadsheet I had (made by mmfaria) for working out coach star ratings had been rendered useless... I searched till my face was blue but I couldn't find a working spreadsheet or the new coach formulas for FM10 anywhere... so I decided to do some research of my own.

I took the original FM09 9.3.0 coach formulas by AJetsOF (thanks pal) and studied them. Underneath the overly complex and seemingly random use of the attributes in the formulas, there was common pattern:

The difference between the cut-off values for 7, 6 and 5 stars was always the same.
Strength: 270 = 7 stars; 240 = 6 stars; 210 = 5 stars (increments of 30)
Goalkeeping: 90 = 7 stars; 80 = 6 stars; 70 = 5 stars (increments of 10)
Defending: 360 = 7 stars; 320 = 6 stars; 280 = 5 stars (increments of 40)

Unfortunately, AJetsOf superb little tables stopped at 5 stars, so I'd have to rely entirely on hypothesis to find out if:
a) There was any relationship between new coach formulas the game uses in FM10 and those it used in FM09 9.3.0 and
b) If so, what that relationship was.

  • First, I hypothesised:

    The difference between the cut-off values in the 9.3.0 formulas was the same FOR ALL STARS.

    Coming up with the full tables for 9.3.0 derived from AJetsOf's 7-5 stars tables was somewhat tricky but this is what I eventually settled for (after some number crunching and the aid of an old FM09 save):

    (FM09 9.3.0 - Strength table)
    >= 270 = 7 stars
    >= 240 = 6 stars
    >= 210 = 5 stars
    >= 180 = 4 stars
    >= 150 = (not used)
    >= 120 = 3 stars
    >= 90 = (not used)
    >= 60 = 2 stars
    >= 30 = (not used)
    >= 0 = 1 star

    So my hypothesis was wrong! It's all very proportional from 7 to 4 stars but below 4 stars it all goes Pete Tong!

  • As my luck would have it though, that puzzling odd looking table was the clue to unlocking the new coach formulas used by the game in FM10...

    When I tried entering all the star numbers from this new 5-stars with half star increments system in the table above, one combination quickly stood out:

    >= 270 = 5 stars
    >= 240 = 4.5 stars
    >= 210 = 4 stars
    >= 180 = 3.5 stars
    >= 150 = 3 stars
    >= 120 = 2.5 stars
    >= 90 = 2 stars
    >= 60 = 1.5 stars
    >= 30 = 1 star
    >= 0 = 0.5 stars

    Hey!... the difference between the cut-off values is the same FOR ALL STARS!
    (Maybe that old hypothesis I discarded like a player who's had a stinker in the previous match could come off the bench and be the team's hero after all!)

So, just like a lower league manager who has blind faith in his players even though you're playing a team 3 divisions above you and you're 2-0 down at half-time , using that table I came up with as a reference, I made tables for all the other training categories applying the same made-up rule above, i.e., the difference between the cut-off values is the same FOR ALL STARS.

Then I took my made-up tables and added the same attribute-based first part of the formula from AJetsOf's formulas for FM09 9.3.0 (e.g. Fitness * 9 + ddm * 2) to them (for no particular reason - just one of those 'what if' things that pop into your head), resulting in a bunch of made-up formulas to work out the star rating for coaches.
(formulas which you can see in the spoiler below)

I used these made-up formulas on the 2 coaches I had in my team and the number of stars I got from the formulas matched those in the game exactly!

Still shocked that I may had stumbled upon the new coach formulas FM10 uses, I made a spreadsheet with my formulas and posted it here for The Dugout community to put the formulas to the test ().

The beta testers who reported back with their results all had accurate star rating predictions from the calculator!

I didn't get a single error report from any of the many other people who had also downloaded the calculator, so I went ahead and released it into the wild and published the coach formulas. Since then it's all been about optimising the format of the formulas in the spreadsheet (spreadsheet software really doesn't like long nested formulas) and turning a cumbersome spreadsheet into something more user-friendly and less time-consuming (whilst having fun seeing the downloads counters change like a fruit machine ).

So that's how the FM Coach Calculator was born... Hope you liked this little story.

ddm: Determination + Discipline + Motivating
>= : equal to or greater than

- Example: Valter Di Salvo (First Team Coach) - Free agent
Fitness 20
Determination 18
Discipline 10
Motivating 20

Strength formula: Fitness * 9 + ddm * 2 (same formula for Aerobic)
(20 * 9) + ((18+10+20) * 2) = 180 + 96 = 276

Strength table (same table for Aerobic):
>= 270 = 5 stars
>= 240 = 4.5 stars
>= 210 = 4 stars
>= 180 = 3.5 stars
>= 150 = 3 stars
>= 120 = 2.5 stars
>= 90 = 2 stars
>= 60 = 1.5 stars
>= 30 = 1 star
>= 0 = 0.5 stars

As 276 is greater than the minimum required for 5 stars (270), this coach has the maximum rating of 5 stars in both Strength and Aerobic. Top coach if you can get him!

FAQs:
Q: Isn't this a cheating tool?

Spoiler:

A: That's an easy accusation to make but one without base, in my view. All the calculations are made using only visible attributes in the game. The calculator does not know or use any hidden attributes or CA/PA values. Neither does it output any information you could not simply obtain using the coach formulas and a pen and paper. To clarify, there's zero difference between using the calculator or pen and paper. The calculator and the coach formulas are two sides of the same coin.

To me, the fact that despite using the calculator (and being able to dismiss coaches by glancing at their DDM) I still spend hours trawling through endless list of coaches the game presents you with in search of half decent ones, tells me I'm not doing anything morally wrong. The calculator is, in essence, a scouting tool for coaches.

If the game had such feature, there would be no reason for using this tool. That's how the whole publishing coach formulas and making spreadsheets to automate calculations began, years before I even started working on the calculator. It wasn't born out of a desire to cheat, but out of the lack of a similar feature in the game.

Q: But the calculator uses hidden formulas!
Spoiler:

A: That's not how I'd describe them... ridiculously obscure formulas essential to evaluate coaches that SI inexplicably wants us to do without - more like.

I make no apologies for publishing the coach formulas. We're not talking about revealing hidden attributes, CA or PA values, just a crucial piece of info to translate a whole bunch of otherwise random coach attributes into something meaningful. At least with players, you can scout them and get a star rating for them. There's nothing of that kind in the game for coaches. The way the whole recruitment and hiring of coaches in the game works is illogical. :Spock:

For as long as SI expect us to take stabs in the dark when it comes to hiring coaches, I'll carry on publishing the formulas and making a tool that lets you play the game in a more logical manner.

Q: Could you make a Greek/Turkish/Chinese/etc. version of the calculator?
Spoiler:

A: Yes, but I'd need some translation info and screenshots. Send me a PM/email.

Hey mate,

Looks a pretty decent calculator and you can tell youve put a lot of effort into it.

Ive done some testing and its worked pretty well but maybe as a little guide, you could put (or me) liek what stats are used for what category?

ie, 15+ Attack, 15+ Tactical, etc = 5star Attacking

I know theyve tweaked with the coaches this year so more stats are relevant, but would be good to have a quick template there to check against.

Good!

(Attacking 18 + Tactical 18 = 5 star Attacking) Oh, the good old times! That's all changed now... Up until FM09 9.3.0 you could look at a couple of stats and work out the number of stars someone would have in any given category fairly easily. Now Determination+Discipline+Motivating play a huge part, stats have been given different weightings and the formulas used to come up with the final star rating are so complex that you may as well buy a lottery ticket if you think you can predict the exact number of stars a coach will have in any of the 9 different training categories...

I'll add a spoiler with the crazy formulas. EDIT: (done!)

No problem. I'm pretty much certain this calculator is 100% accurate. It's now been downloaded more than 500 times and I'm still to hear from anyone who's had the calculator throw an incorrect star rating at them.

Just try it on your coaches. The star ratings the calculator gives you for them should be identical to those in the game.

Yeah. Will test later and post the results. I've spent a lot of time searching for the right coaches. This program is a blessing.

Since this is made in Flash, is it possible to turn it into a web-based Flash app? I know us non-PC users would appreciate it.

Funny you say that. The online version of the calculator is all done and ready . I'm just waiting for the domain host to activate the free domain I applied for yesterday. I expect to have it up sometime tomorrow.

Welcome to The Dugout.

Can't say I've had any messages about the calculator not working. Do videos on YouTube play ok on your computer? If so, this Flash-based calculator should work too.

Try the PDF version and the online version. If you still can't run it then, let me know and I'll send you the link for the spreadsheet version (which is nowhere near as user-friendly but does the job).

What makes a good Assistant Manager is a lot less clear cut. If you ask 100 people, you'll probably get 100 different opinions on the necessary key attributes for an assistant manager.

I personally still use this as a guide:

Assistant Managers

Unless you take on the task yourself, this fella is very important to any club. He is vital for the development of the club and staff.
Ideally your looking for a combination of coaching skills and managerial style that matches your own. A good eye for talent and potential also helps a major plus if you’re going to rely on his comments.
Make sure your reserves and under19s play the same formation as the 1st team to get them used to how you play.

Essential Skills

Coaching outfield players, judging player ability, man management, motivation and a similar style of play as your own.

Do the following:

- Update your Adobe Flash Player:
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

- 'Run as administrator':
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...nistrator.html

If that doesn't do the trick, try the PDF version and the online version.

Great tool! Thanks a lot mate.

Btw, it's working in Win 7 RC Ultimate. Adobe Flash Player was already updated. I don't have to run it like an admin, but maybe I login like one, I don't remember and I'm not home to check.

Glad you like it.

Yes, you shouldn't need to run the program as an admin. The 'Run as administrator' thing is just something that I think may help in the very unlikely event that someone (possibly logging in on Vista/Windows 7 under a non-administrator account) runs into problems. I've only had 2 people report problems running the calculator (out of now 6,000 downloads), so that piece of advice is based more on guesswork than anything else.

I think as long as your Adobe Flash Player is up-to-date (and your Windows is not corrupted ), the calculator will run just fine.

Default Calculator not accurate!!!!

Hi all, iv been using this calculator to help me sort out my backroom staff, my coach's were all 2 stars as for some reason after countless years of playing the game i was unaware of how to judge coaches lol.

Anyway you will see from the pictures below that the coach calculator gives my coach a 4 star rating in defensive coaching but when they are in my team it only shows 2.5 stars. Please can someone explain this to me!!!

I can't login to facebook right now (I'm at work) but check if you have all types of training checkboxes ticked for that couch. If so, untick them all and just tick defense.

This is a great tool. Is there any way of working out how they might perform if they're working on two or more skills? Does it just halve their performance?

Hi

Thanks for your good effort made and carry on the good work. Can you please post the minimum requirement for a 5star coach in each category or how it is calculated without the tool?

E.g => 15+ Attack, 15+ Tactical, etc = 5star Attacking(posted above)

As otherwise i am very sorry but i don't really see the need to use your tool since with genie scout you can get the same info with the advantage of not requiring to put each figure individually(Saves a lot of time).

Thanks.

For what it's worth at this point, I've used Bonzo's flash application as a template for a native Cocoa application for the Mac OS. If anyone is interested, please send me a PM...
