Paraguay is one of South America's poorest countries, but one that has recently punched above its weight certainly at international level in recent football history. Paraguay have qualified for the last four World Cups and reached the quarter-finals in South Africa in 2010.

At club level Paraguay also has a rich history, although concentrated solely around Olimpia's three Copa Libertadores titles and three further finals. Along with cross-city rivals Cerro Porteńo they form the 'clásico' of Paraguayan football, but other big clubs include Libertad, Nacional and Guaraní.

The top division contains 12 clubs who play in reality both Apertura and Clausura championships, but due to the limitations of the editor here they play a single 44-match year long championship. The second division also contains 12 clubs, and the third division is inactive.
